Temporary Stay Granted for UC Davis Honors Student Mandeep Chahal & Mother
By Kalpana V. Peddibhotla
Mandeep Chahal and her mother were released from ICE custody on June 21, 2011 at 9:30 a.m. and given a temporary stay of removal. Mandeep is a pre-med honors student at UC Davis and had just finished her sophomore year. Mandeep Chahal was voted ‘Most Likely to Save the World’ in 2009 by her classmates at Los Altos High School. Her deportation would have been tragic for her, her family, and her community. She is already a young leader with much to offer the United States and beyond.
I have represented the pair since the Fall of 2010. Their situation has not been fully resolved. I am in communication with Department of Homeland Security and am hopeful that we will have a definitive resolution to their case soon. I and the family wish to thank the thousands of supporters from around the country who have advocated on their behalf, without which I am fairly certain that Mandeep and her mother would have been deported. Please keep up your support as there is still much work to be done.
